2009 Annual Scientific Meeting

Scott Gayner, MD, was
inducted as the next PAO-HNS president

The 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting was held June 12-13 at the beautiful Bedford Springs Resort. The meeting highlighted keynote addresses by Jonas Johnson, MD, who spoke on the role of the surgeon in the era of chemoradiation, Peter Catalano, MD, who discussed evidence-based utility of balloon sinuplasty, and also Joseph Spiegel, MD, spoke about transnasal esophagoscopy. The meeting also featured lectures by Robert Ferris, MD, PhD, FACS. Gregory Weinstein, MD, and Libby Smith, DO and many panel discussions on issues impacting otolaryngologists.

Awards Presented at the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting

Each year, candidates are considered for three awards to be presented at the PAO-HNS Annual Scientific Meeting. Each award is not always given. This year, all three awards were presented to very deserving recipients.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Robert L. Ferris, MD, PhD, FACS in recognition of his many years of devoted service to the PAO-HNS.

Deorrah L. Johnston

Deborrah L. Johnston, Au.D and Immediate Past President Robert Ferris, MD, PhD, FACS

The Citation for Distinguished Service was presented to Deborrah L. Johnston, Au.D in recognition for her dedicated service as an audiologist in overseeing the hearing needs of the entire school population at DePaul Institute.

The Community Service Citation was presented to the Honorable P. Michael Sturla in recognition of his work as Chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee, and for his continual and dedicated support of the physician community and maintaining the highest standards of quality patient health care in Pennsylvania.

Brian Shaffer, MD, was the recipient of the 2009 Francis W. Davison Award for his paper entitled, “Validation of a Patient-Graded Quality of Life Instrument for Acoustic Neuroma."

Eelam Adil, MD, was the abstract poster award winner for her poster, “Minimally Invasive Radioguided Parathyroidectomy Performed for Primary Hyperparathyroidism”
